Dr. Mary Avery

Dear
Parents and Students,
As
the newly appointed Principal of Baker, I feel deeply honored to
serve you and your families. On behalf of the faculty and staff, it
is indeed my pleasure to welcome you to the 2007- 2008 school year.
Our
mission at Baker is simply to ensure that every student is receiving
a quality education that meets Georgia Standards and which prepares
them to compete and succeed as they continue their education.
We
are putting in place some improvement initiatives that are helping
to increase student achievement. Last year our Reading test score
was above the required Annual Yearly Progress (AYP). This year we
are establishing a Computer Skills Lab to help us bring our Math
score in line with state expectations. Since middle school is a time
of growth and exploration, students actively participate in a wide
range of exploratory classes to discover their interests. Students
will also meet with homeroom teachers on a daily basis for extra
support. Community- building and anti- bullying activities are also
are part of the homeroom period. The school offers several programs
during the school day and after school for students who need extra
academic instruction.
Our
home reading program soared last year as our students read more and
more books. Thank you for encouraging great readers at Baker. There
are also a multitude of extra – curricular offerings for our
students.
If
you have any questions or concerns that arise throughout the school
year, please feel free to contact your child’s teachers or the
school office. I hope that each student will have an enjoyable,
rewarding, and positive experience at Baker Middle School this year.
We also invite you to join us in our efforts to make Baker the
Best middle school in our district. Please feel welcome in our
building at all times.

Greetings,
Mrs. Fourhman and I
are very excited about the services we are offering to Baker's students this year. Mrs. Fourhman is the counselor serving as our Graduation Coach. This is
the first year that middle schools in Georgia have Graduation
Coaches. Mrs. Fourhman will provide the necessary support to those
students who have excessive absenteeism, failing grades/retention,
and significant behavior concerns. Her primary focus will be
working with those students who are transitioning into middle school
and out to high school.
I (Ms. Walker) will serve as counselor for
the 6th and 8th grades. The Georgia
School Counseling and Guidance Standards listed below are the
objectives used in the classroom activities. Group counseling is
provided to students with academic concerns, student diagnosed with
ADHD/ADD, students with parents deployed in war zones, and students
with anger or other emotional issues. Individual counseling,
consultations and referrals are available as
needed.
